Hiring a Lifestyle Photographer – What Questions to Ask

We all have a story to tell and what better way to capture it than by creating your very own time capsule using professional lifestyle photographs? To get the most out of this investment, it’s important to find a lifestyle photographer whose style and ethos matches yours. The best way to do this is by researching and asking the following questions:

What type of photography do you specialise in?

Choosing a photographer is a big decision and you want someone who specialises in the type of images you’re after. For example, if you want studio-based, posed shots, I am not the photographer for you as my expertise lies in natural, honest shots. I offer four different lifestyle photography sessions, which are:

What sets you apart from other lifestyle photographers?

As a mother myself, I understand the nuances and complexities of being a parent. As my own children grow, the speed at which time passes becomes ever more apparent, so I realise the urgency of capturing unique and special moments.

I am an Edinburgh-based photographer but ultimately a citizen of the world, having lived in cities across Europe. Seeing the differences and similarities of cultures, and how these affect family dynamics, has given me a special insight into lifestyle photography that few family photographers share.

What should I do if my children misbehave?

Children will be children. The best way to manage challenging behaviour is to work around it. As family photoshoots are an authentic depiction of your life, I won’t be trying to force smiles out of anyone. It will be a source of conversation and laughter when looking back at the photographs and remembering how grumpy they could be!

What should I wear for a photoshoot?

When it comes to choosing what to wear, my best piece of advice is to dress in an outfit you feel most comfortable in. Some people like to go all out and have their hair and makeup done whilst others prefer to keep things more low-key and natural. If you would like more guidance, don’t worry, I do send out some general guidelines after a photography session is booked.

What happens if bad weather is forecast for an outdoor photography session?

Anyone living in Scotland will know just how unpredictable the weather can be! If inclement weather is forecast for the day of your photoshoot, we reschedule to another date. This won’t affect your deposit unless you cancel the session completely.

How much do you charge and what is included in the fee?

Each of my four lifestyle photography sessions (maternity, newborn, family, couples) cost £300. The duration of these varies slightly, depending on the type of shoot – you can find out more details here.

Approximately one month after your session, I will provide you with at least 30 carefully selected and edited lifestyle photographs via a secure online gallery. Any retouching will be minor—i.e. to remove large spots—as I preserve as many natural characteristics as possible. The RAW or unedited files are not available to purchase.

Can I buy printed photographs?

Yes, you can order professionally printed photographs, canvas prints or a photo book after our session. I always encourage my clients to have their photographs printed. Creating a wall gallery so that you can see your photographs each time you pass enables you to enjoy them every day. Alternatively, a photo book can be perused at your leisure, either individually with a cup of tea, or as a family, snuggled up on the sofa.
