Capturing your pregnancy glow with a maternity photography session in Edinburgh and beyond.

As a family lifestyle photographer, I’m lucky enough to observe families as they grow and evolve, witnessing their special bonds and the way they express their love for one another. I find that each magical stage has its own sense of purpose:

  • Newborn photography illustrates new beginnings, cosy cuddles and finding new rhythms.
  • Family photographs portray warm domesticity, shared togetherness and a melting pot of personalities.
  • Couples’ photography depicts romantic love, merging lives and hopes for the future.
  • Maternity photography not only captures blooming motherhood but also the bubbling excitement and keen anticipation of the family as a whole.

Preparing for a maternity photography session

A maternity photoshoot is a celebration of how your pregnant body looks and what it is capable of. As your excitement grows, along with your belly, the images that I capture will highlight your unique pregnancy and the much-discussed ‘pregnancy glow’. It’s so important to choose an outfit that not only makes you look and feel your best but that is comfortable too. I want you to thoroughly enjoy your maternity photography session and wearing the right clothes can make all the difference. If you’re feeling unsure about how to dress, don’t worry, I have some guidelines to share with you once you’ve booked your maternity photoshoot.

Your maternity photographs should reflect who you and your family are. Location is a key part of this. Would you like to be snapped at home, surrounded by your cherished possessions, or would you prefer to be out and about, pictured in a favourite park or other outdoor space? As an Edinburgh family photographer, I can help you choose your perfect location in and around the city – or further afield if you wish.

Arranging your maternity photography session

When booking a maternity photoshoot, the most important considerations are how you feel and the size of your pregnancy bump. A big, round belly that hasn’t yet dropped makes for perfect maternity photographs. The ideal stage of pregnancy is at the start of your third trimester, between 30 and 36 weeks. Hopefully at this point, you’ll still be feeling comfortable and full of energy. As you move closer to the birth, you may start to feel tired and, therefore, not in the right frame of mind to do a maternity photoshoot. It’s also worth bearing in mind that little ones don’t always stick to the plan and sometimes show up ahead of schedule!

If you’re having twins, triplets or more, I would suggest scheduling your maternity photography session sooner rather than later – between 20 and 24 weeks. This is because your bump will be more established as you have more than one baby growing in there, and your babies are more likely to arrive early.

To provide you with a truly exceptional experience, I have only a limited number of sessions available each month – so it’s a good idea to book your maternity photography session well in advance. I recommend doing so near the beginning of your second trimester to secure your spot – even earlier if you’re expecting more than one.
