Celebrate Mother’s Day with a Female-Only Photography Session

These days Mother’s Day is all about treating your mum, or a mother-figure in your life, to something special. A way of saying thank you for their enduring love and support. This thank you is often in the form of flowers or a Sunday lunch out somewhere nice. But how about this year you try something different, something that really shows your mum how much she means to you – something she’ll treasure for years to come.

Me time

However much we love our families, every so often we need a little time to ourselves. And this is where a solo photoshoot may be just the thing for your mum. I love to photograph ‘real’ people, highlighting what makes them unique, what makes them THEM. I am all about natural photography, but this doesn’t mean your mum can’t indulge in a little pre-shoot pampering – after all, this is her day and it's about what makes her feel happy and comfortable. And, most importantly, how she wishes to express herself. You can read more about my thoughts on body positivity here

Celebrating women

Another idea I’d love to explore this year is a female-only photography session – be it mother and daughter; mother, daughter and granddaughter; sisters or even best friends. Female relationships are so important and yet are often sidelined. Capturing how women interact when they’re together, the ways in which they bond and exhibit their love and affection for each other makes for warm, joyful imagery.  I’ll click away as they laugh, tease and encourage – interacting in a way that clearly displays shared trust, respect and understanding

Embracing spring

Spring is habitually the time that we choose to refresh and reset, and this makes it the perfect season for a Mother’s Day photography session – particularly one that should leave your mum feeling uplifted, appreciated and empowered. These sessions absolutely cry out to be held outdoors. In Edinburgh, where I live and mainly work, from April to early May, you will find yourself surrounded by a veritable explosion of cherry blossom – with photo ops galore!

Cherry pick

Just south of Edinburgh’s Old Town sits The Meadows, a large area of public parkland that is a favourite haunt of blossom seekers. To avoid the admiring hordes, an early morning photo session here is a must. I’ll photograph your mum as she strolls along the cherry tree-lined pathways, the soft morning light filtering through the branches.

For somewhere a little more peaceful, I head north to Starbank Park, an old Victorian walled garden, steeped in history. As well as the spectacular display of cherry blossoms, there are also stunning views over the Firth of Forth – both making magnificent backdrops for the photos. But what I really love about it here is the feeling of intimacy the enclosed garden instils into my photographs. The benches dotted about make wonderful spots for close-ups – shots of your mum chatting away or sharing a quiet moment with a loved one.

Another beloved spot of mine is Lauriston Castle – home to one of the best Japanese gardens in the UK. The billowing pink and white cherry blossoms are enhanced by bamboo structures, a babbling stream and a koi pond, bringing charm and interest, as well as the opportunity for a few playful pics.
